What makes it different

Not decorated. Collected.

Hotels buy prints by the metre. Here the walls carry oil paintings laid on thick with a palette knife, made by the man who lived here — hung salon-style down the corridor, above the sofa, along the kitchen tiles.

Between them sits everything else he gathered over a lifetime. You do not tour it. You live in it for a few days, and then you leave.

The installations

Alongside the paintings are a number of assembled pieces. Each carries a title the artist gave it, and is listed here under that title.

The house

Room for five, and room to breathe

One bedroom with two beds, a living room with a sofa bed, a full kitchen you will actually want to cook in, and a bathroom with both a shower and a tub. Lift to the door. A courtyard of pines below the windows.

The kitchen seen along its length: wooden cabinets, granite worktops, and a long table with a blue cloth
The entrance hall with a coat rack, patterned wallpaper, a model sailing ship on a shelf and a painting of a sun above it
Where you are

A real neighbourhood, not a postcard

San Giovanni is where Rome goes about its day: bars with standing-room coffee, a Saturday market, families on the benches at dusk. The monuments are close enough to walk to and far enough that you sleep in quiet.
